Jack & Kathy Henderson – My Last Year

Jack & Kathy Henderson – My Last Year (1980)

A friend in marketing suggested that in order to take over the world (or at least the Midwest) ponytone needs to become more of a niche blog and focus on just one genre.  So from now on I will concentrate on private press outsider lounge student disco with an almost surfy vibe made by husband-wife duos from New York.

Beatles Covers

Les Shattels – Hey Bull Dog (1968, France)

Two amazing Beatles covers – both slated for my upcoming Beatles covers compilation. “Hey Bulldog” just so happens to be my second favorite Beatles song of all time and this Shattels version thrills me to the bone.

Haze – Eleanor Rigby (Haze, 1974)

Haze is a collection of songs from the morning assemblies of Hayes School in Kent, England.  Most of the tracks were recorded in one take on July 17th and 19th, 1974.  According to the liner notes the students and staff held a 13-mile walk-a-thon in the heat of the afternoon sun to raise money for the production of the record. “Yes! Believe it or not, the sun did shine” wrote producer Anthony Hughes.

Did you know this is the fifth “Eleanor Rigby” to appear on Ponytone? Here are the others, in case you missed them:

M. Daud Kilau

M. Daud Kilau – Joget Si-Hitam

(Kaseh Setitek Embun, 1973, Malaysia)

M. Daud Kilau was affectionately known as Malaysia’s “Raja Galek” (“King of the Gyrating Dance Moves”). Oddly, there was a soccer player from Singapore in the 70s who was ALSO known as “Raja Galek” because of his superb dribbling skills. And I suppose there could be countless other Raja Galeks roaming the earth. Anyway, M. Daud Kilau was renowned not only for his musical talents but also for his flamboyant stage presence, highlighted by his self-crafted beaded costumes. He had a passion for sewing these intricate outfits himself, often working on them backstage before performances. This dedication to his attire became a hallmark of his live shows, contributing to his iconic status in the Malaysian music scene. After winning the Bintang Radio Competition in 1968, Kilau spent decades serenading Malaysia with asli and dangdut hits, all while wrapped in a layer of handmade radiance. Yay.

Malaysia Vasudevan & S.P. Sailaja – Kannippen Kannukkulley

Malaysia Vasudevan & S.P. Sailaja – Kannippen Kannukkulley (1982)

From the Tamil film Oorum Uravum, starring Sivaji Ganesan. Now for today’s trivia question: What do Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, and Sivaji Ganesan have in common? The answer may surprise you. Besides being overrated actors with a penchant for walnuts, they all financed the construction of at least one statue. In fact, Sivaji Ganesan commissioned three: the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mumbai, the Thiruvalluvar statue on Marina Beach Road in Chennai, and the Kattabomman statue in Kayathar. I have already forgotten all of this information.
